While Life of Pi begins with a little too much scene setting, there’s no doubting that this is a triumph of imagination. Martel seems anxious we understand Pi as a naïve young man who believes all religions to be complementary and so can’t understand why he can’t follow them all. Pi never loses this innocence – somehow his faith is never truly challenged or corrupted – but it’s not god who enables him to survive months at sea (we hear nothing of him post-shipwreck) but the power of Pi’s own naïve imagination.
