It’s good to see that Charles’ support for alternative cancer cures has earned him a slapping down from a leading surgeon. Charles has been promoting Gerson, a trendy detox diet as a cure for cancer. (In America it’s illegal to promote Gerson this way.) There is some anecdotal evidence to support the Prince, but when a desperately ill person chooses to believe in a new last hope therapy, we should (without bursting their bubble) take that with a pinch of salt.

The Prof does a reasonable job. ‘It is in the nature of your world to be surrounded by sycophants who reinforce what they assume are your prejudices. Sir, they patronise you,’ he says, before warning that there is, ‘an awful lot of money changing hands. If it went into medical research perhaps we could move forward faster.’ In other words, there’s no shortage of people ready to get rich by bamboozling the feebleminded heir to the throne. As Polly Toynbee says, Prince Charles ‘spouts archaic notions because he has no role in modern life’

Meanwhile, we can all laugh at another victim of quackery, Gwyneth Paltrow, as she proudly parades her whelked back.
