It looks like Jamster failed to place its own Chick Sweety ringtone (which you can buy here, if you must) number one for Easter Sunday. It’s a failure few will mourn, especially as Crazy Frog has held on to his position. But it did get me wondering whether all the hype (which dates back at least as far as 2003) that ringtones will outsell singles one day was up to anything.
It looks like even bringing in accountancy heavyweights KPMG has failed to create a consensus ringtone chart to rival the Official UK Top 40. So I was all set to opine that Jamster et al have got it all wrong (assuming they want chart fame, of course) by pursuing the novelty ringtone route. Indeed, with mobile phone technology what it is, today’s kiddies have Real Music or MP3 quality ringtones and so there’s no excuse for persisting with the Chick Sweety or Crazy Frog nonsense.
But maybe I’m wrong, with the flaw in my argument a failure to recognise that novelty records have never been that far from the charts. And I’ve learned that ex-Chart Show DJ Wes Butters is to take revenge for his recent ousting by releasing the Crazy Frog Chorus. So perhaps novelty will prove to be the battering ram that takes ringtones into the mainstream.
