The main thought that struck me as I wondered around Tracey Emin’s When I think about sex…, was that she’s no great intellect. But that doesn’t mean I’m not a fan: I was tempted to splash out on a Little Owl, the limited edition etching on sale alongside the T-shirts. I’m occasionally woken by an owl that lives on Chorlton Brook. I’ve never seen it, but this Emin is exactly how I imagine it to look. What makes Emin’s work great is the honesty of her autobiography which is empowered by a strong self-awareness (Stupid Super Drunk Bitch) and a real talent for communicating real life experience through art (It Always Hurts) all of which is apparently uncluttered by great theories, leaving intellectualisation to the rest of us.
