Following on from the triumph that was Billy Elliot the Musical, something we’d approached with great trepidation, Katharine and I braved our second stage musical at the Royal Exchange (so we’re still not hanging with the blue rinses), Sex, Chips & Rock ‘n’ Roll. And to be honest, midway through the first half I wasn’t planning to come back for the second. It was too full-on for me to begin with. I knew it was a musical but it opened with song after song with no linking dialogue for the first eternity, so more like an opera. And people applaud after each one i.e. every five minutes. Whoa! I was thinking, stop the ride I wanna get off!

Soon it settled down and I while I cringed at their rendering of Oasis, I did get into the groove. Not much story and what there is is very predictable, but in the end I enjoyed myself despite myself. To quote Abraham Lincoln: ‘People who like this sort of thing will find this the sort of thing they like.’
