Manchester Craft Centre’s a good place to start any search for affordable, yet original art and jewelry. It’s not just for hippies, goths and other drop outs: there’s plenty for straight, conventional people like yours truly.

But I’ve just been reminded that these artist types, including the one I was after (from whom I bought a pic of the Manchester Central Library and a calendar), aren’t morning people. Many of the units were closed at half ten (I’d already completed a gym session and explored the new Arndale). So I’ve spent the morning looking at art in nearby galleries I can’t really afford to shop, drinking coffee and reading the papers while waiting for the artists to wake up. This is something I should do more often.
