Gordon Ramsay is tipped to bring a new urban cool to Royal Doulton, which has historically suffered a rather old fashioned image. Ramsay’s Royal Doulton Range will feature both casual and fine dining sets and he’ll use the latter in his own restaurants, which include Claridge’s.
I suspect Royal Doulton has hit on something here. After decades of eating at home being dominated by TV dinners, there is a trend back towards making eating at home something of an event. People like to put on the odd dinner party and it makes sense to show off with a good looking dinner set. But you don’t want it to look like something your grandmother used to have on her wall. It looks like getting celebrities like Gordon Ramsay and Nigella Lawson on board will place Royal Doulton back on everyone’s wish list.
Meanwhile, Royal Doulton forges ahead with new collectable ranges, including an Elvis Presley range, that can’t possibly be as elegant as the Ramsay dinner sets… for some reason it’s simply not possible to make Elvis Presley memorabilia tasteful.
