Gnarls Barkley’s St. Elsewhere is proving to be a most excellent soundtrack for summer 2006, just as summer 1989 belonged to Soul II Soul. For me Danger Mouse and Cee-Lo pick up where Jazzie B left off (it feels like 1989 was the last time we had summer weather too, not that I remember).
St. Elsewhere (named after the acclaimed pre-ER medical drama my parents watched, which finally gets a DVD release this summer), makes for a very short 37 minutes. While Soul II Soul dragged out the summer days, Gnarls Barkley’s informed by all the dance music that’s passed since and whizzes by. But they never lose their cool.
