Old people in the sun

Click to see ‘Old people in the sun’ in a variety of different sizesIt’s 29 degrees in the shade (84 in old money). If you were holidaying abroad, you’d brag.

Yet the old dear on the left is dressed for winter. And she’s not alone in having a habit of wearing the same outfit whatever the weather.

It’s not the case that older people don’t feel the heat like we do: TV weather reports are advising them to ring NHS Direct for advise on dealing with the heat. A few years ago I was on a bus when an old man collapsed. Paramedics arrived quickly and loosened his jacket and tie. He was also wearing a jumper, shirt and — believe it or not — a vest. He’d boiled himself alive.

So why do old people dress so inappropriately? I suspect that, for many, fine weather doesn’t fit with their worldview. Inappropriate dress is an expression of their denial that the world is a much better place than when they were young.
This posted via mobile via Flickr and so not so closely proofread. Click the pic to see it large (there’s an ‘all-sizes’ tab for really large).
