Lisa King Fithian of Alabama must wear this ‘I stole from Wal-Mart’ sign for a couple of Saturdays as a humiliating punishment.
I reckon justice should be seen to be done but this looks like a silly, doomed to fail, attempt to return to the stocks. When I saw the photo I assumed Lisa King Fithian to be one of those anti-capitalism protestors on a lone vigil against the world’s largest retailer.
And I’m not the only one. If Tim Dowling of the Guardian’s idea takes off, she’ll be surrounded by real anti-Wal-Mart protestors who will no doubt radicalise her and leave her feeling really good about her crime.
This is what happens when you stick labels on people; before long they claim them as badges of honour.
