Big Brother Emily’s nigger moment

Just as you think you’ve weaned yourself off it, they drag you back in. (Although I’ve only really watched Celebrity Big Brother.)

I reckon Emily Parr’s use of nigger is mostly a product of the naivety that comes from having led a sheltered life. Yeah rappers call each other nigger, but when Emily’s little friends copy they only display their ignorance. So she didn’t understand why her new black Big Brother friends were shocked.

Out of the mouth of a black person, ‘nigger’ can only be ironic. From a white mouth… well, you need to be very good friends.

Not sure I’d have sacked her, a diary room dressing down would have done it.

   a few points of interest:

   the african slaves that were sold to europeans hundreds of years ago were owned/captured by other black people. They were the ones to first call the slaves ‘niggers’ (via contact with the spanish)

   emily said “nigga” which is very different from the oft-reported “nigger”

   I’ve never heard people using the word so much before. This whole debacle has brought the word into much more common usage. My grocer (asian) said it to me today (i’m chinese)

   you’re blowing out of your hole. Don’t come trying to philosophize on it. she said nigger. She said nigga. she still said nigger. She’s not ‘down’ with black people in the ‘hood’ up in Bristol. So, she’s not busting slang. Tbh, if she was familiar with afro-Caribbeans, she would’ve spoke patois.
