Too many places lay claim to being the Venice of the north (even no-mark Birmingham) but this little port, Martigues in the south of France, must rank among the most convincing (although it’s not far north) as it has a church by the waterway with suitably aged high colourful, crumbling walls.
But rather than show that, I’ve opted to share this ship being towed through an alley. Less picturesque scenes in Salford, prompted by the Manchester Ship Canal, inspired the nursery rhyme.
