Australia is taking the credit for saving humpback whales from Japanese fishermen (although I’m sure our local MP’s protest helped) and will send a patrol boat to monitor the ‘senseless and brutal’ hunt.
Seeing Australia on the side of the angels certainly makes a change from the recently deceased Howard administration famed for stunts like the ‘Pacific Solution’, an immigration policy in the tradition of ‘White Australia’ that threatened to mark the country out as a red neck nation. (But let’s hope new premier Kevin Rudd doesn’t follow Gordon Brown’s example and rehabilitate John Howard in an Australian government of all the talents.)
