The Serpent is a film that reminds us how much contemporary film noir owes to the French New Wave it inspired. Yet the film remains very much a by-the-book thriller that turns slasher movie after exposing a life turned upside down by revenge for a childhood crime (much like Haneke’s Hidden) and fails to surprise.
