The Police, Manchester Evening News Arena

YouTube-podcast
I felt a little apprehensive on the way to see the Police at the Manchester Evening News Arena the other week. There’s little doubt they were one of the great post-punk bands, delivering a popular and rocky white reggae as the 1970s became the 1980s that could not fail to capture the mood of the times.

But then Sting had to spoil it all, with some truly embarrassing solo rubbish (‘What might save us, me, and you / Is if the Russians love their children too’). Worse he took to reworking old Police classics into the worst possible covers; Roxanne became impossibly dreary.

Anyway. Such fears were immediately quashed and this was a great experience to treasure. It’s hard to imagine any drummer beating Stewart Copeland for stage presence. Above highlights include snippets from Message in a Bottle, Walking on the Moon, Don’t Stand So Close to Me, Every Little Thing She Does, Wrapped Around Your Finger, De Do Do Do De Da Da Da, Invisible Sun, Can’t Stand Losing You, Roxanne, King of Pain, So Lonely and Every Breath You Take.
