I’ve noticed that ‘back in the day’ has become a popular phrase among younger people. I’ve no idea why that should be or why it should irritate me so much. But it does. What is the meaning of ‘back in the day’? Why is always said with a classy eyed expression? Is it just some silly golden age theory?
My brief and fruitless search for a definition of ‘back in the day’ has led me to discover that I’m not alone. Someone’s created a ‘back in the day’ calculator that works out what ‘back in the day’ means to you based on your birth year. Born in 1969, my timeframe is 1987 to 1991. That’s when I was a student… it all makes sense now.
