My surprise of the day has been the discovery that one of my early posts, Myth of moral superiority, has been quoted at length in support of banning Lord of the Flies. Probably my fault for rambling on too long. The owner of the anonymous web site, has lost my train of thought and for that I apologise.
Nevertheless, it seems an odd interpretation of the post. It said we shouldn’t have been so surprised at the Abu Ghraib abuses and that, despite the protestations, we’re all capable of thinking up horrific tortures and humiliations for our enemies. The conclusion was not that imaginings like Lord of the Flies should be banned – far from it. It was that we should have known our troops better and protected them from themselves.
