Monsieur Lazhar review

An inevitably melancholic film — the eponymous Monsieur Lazhar is the new teacher who replaces one who has committed suicide — this remains a tender well acted movie. The classification as comedy may leave some a bit confused. I found even the lightest comic relief to be thin on the ground and this does underline what, for me, is the film’s largest flaw: this is a movie that lacks rhythm. The entire 95 minutes pass at the same tempo.

Nevertheless Monsieur Lazhar — which is lightly, but well plotted — does succeed in serving up a dark twist alongside the catharsis, that goes quite some way to redeeming the film and earning it a respectable three out of five stars.
