The only popes at Avignon today are human statues like this guy. He has recieved a modest photo fee, something I wasn’t prepared to offer his colleague in white; he played hippie classical music that made me think of the Wicker Man.
The palace itself may not be a Vatican, but the guidebooks can be a little harsh as it is no empty shell either. It’s surprisingly intact and with a little imagination it’s easy to visualise papal extravagance. The free audio guide is disappointingly literal: ‘This painting of a hunting scene has a blue sky.’
Provence often feels a bit Italian and Avignon has a similar atmosphere to Florence.
